Inter Miami said the reports at that time were inaccurate. Continue reading...

Turkish football leagues suspended after team president punches referee – video

A Turkish Super Lig game erupted in chaos when the match referee was punched by the president of one of the teams before being kicked as he lay on the ground. Ankaragucu’s president, Faruk Koca, struck the referee, Halil Umut Meler, at the end of their home match after Rizespor scored a 97th-minute equaliser. Koca walked on to the pitch and hit the referee when the final whistle blew in the 1-1 draw at Eryaman Stadium. The president of Turkey's football association, Mehmet Buyukeksi, condemned the event as an "inhumane attack" and announced an indefinite suspension to matches in all Turkish leagues. Koca and two others have been arrested for "injuring a public official". * Turkish football league suspended after Ankaragucu president punches referee * Ankaragucu president arrested following incident Continue reading...

Mikel Arteta tests Arsenal young guns as ‘three big prospects’ travel to PSV

Gambar
* Ethan Nwaneri, Reuell Walters and Lino Sousa in line to play * Manager pleased to have Emile Smith Rowe back from injury Mikel Arteta may roll the dice and give Arsenal’s latest crop of youngsters a chance as he seeks meaning in a Champions League dead rubber against PSV Eindhoven. The academy products Ethan Nwaneri, Reuell Walters and Lino Sousa travelled to the Netherlands on Monday, with all standing a realistic chance of some action on a night ripe for experimentation. Should Nwaneri feature it would be his first appearance since becoming the club’s youngest player, attaining the same record for the Premier League, when in September 2022 he came off the bench at Brentford aged 15 years and 181 days. Given Arsenal are relatively light at full‑back there will be hope that the 18-year‑olds Walters and Sousa, who play on the right and left respectively, are blooded for their senior debuts at some stage. Aston Villa have upended the Premier League’s paradigm

Gambar
Under Unai Emery, could the club turn the league title into a four-way race? * Sign up to Jonathan’s weekly newsletter here These are heady days for Aston Villa. Everybody suspected they were underperforming under former coach Steven Gerrard, but nobody perhaps quite expected the lift-off that has happened under Unai Emery. It’s not just that they sit third in the table, two points off the top, it’s the fact that in their past two games they have beaten last season’s top two. The assumption is that, at some point, they will stumble, and talk of them being in a title race is always delivered in tones that acknowledge that, but whether that happens or not, the performance in beating Manchester City last Wednesday was one of the most striking the Premier League has ever known. It may only have finished 1-0, but Villa battered City – xG models had the hosts up 2.33 to City’s 0.86. This wasn’t about being clever and picking off their opponents on the break, or surviving a sustaine

Manchester United open to offers for players including Casemiro and Sancho

The manager is not intent on pushing any player out and United do not anticipate a busy month but financial fair play rules mean there is the need to generate funds in order to strengthen, so he and the club’s hierarchy will listen to any prospective bidders. Bewildered Bayern’s repeat 5-1 nightmare blows title race open | Andy Brassell

Gambar
Last time Bayern were routed in Frankfurt they won the treble. This time Thomas Tuchel may need to spend in January The last time? The last time was fresh enough in the memory that you hardly needed to be a historian to have it instantly spring to mind. Bayern Munich had been here before, and not so long ago. While the last time had represented a more profound nadir and, conversely, the beginning of a journey to an improbable high, neither extreme felt likely here. This was neither the end of one thing nor the start of something else. As with much of the Thomas Tuchel era (can it only be nine months on Christmas Eve?), even attempting to decipher it all feels like a fool’s errand. Four years ago Bayern had also received a dizzying pounding at Eintracht Frankfurt, by exactly the same score. 5-1. That had lasting consequences, firstly marking the end of the Niko Kovac era and then ushering in Hansi Flick’s. From humiliation on free-to-air to TV – the game had been one of the handful

Premier League: 10 talking points from the weekend’s action

Gambar
Liverpool go top, Chelsea seem to need even more financial backing, and no one wants to bet against Villa The bad news for Luton is that they’ve already played the (notional) best three teams in the league at home. In the past five weeks, they’ve drawn with Liverpool, lost 4-3 to Arsenal to a 97th-minute winner, and gone down to a narrow 2-1 defeat by Manchester City. In all three games they’ve gone ahead. Playing the elite clearly suits Rob Edwards’ side. The issue is whether they can produce that quality of performance against lesser sides. They beat Crystal Palace 2-1 at home during that run, and that has to be the model. Playing a 3-4-3 gives them plenty of crossing options – and Andros Townsend remains a very fine deliverer of a ball, as he proved in laying on Elijah Adebayo’s goal against City – and they have the physicality to take advantage. The worry is that they are now four points adrift, even with Everton’s points deduction; they could do with finding some of the luck the

Wilfried Nancy’s gonzo Columbus Crew are deserving MLS champions

Gambar
Only five years after the founder members nearly skipped town, the French manager’s opportunistic, effervescent Crew SC are the MLS Cup winners for a second time in four seasons Diego Rossi, Julian Gressel, Malte Amundsen, Rudy Camacho and Christian Ramirez played their parts. But the key transfer for the Columbus Crew, the move that turned a team that missed the playoffs in the previous two years into the 2023 MLS champions, was the capture of the head coach. Whatever the Crew paid Montreal in compensation a year ago to hire Wilfried Nancy, it was worth it. First Nancy shaped Columbus into the league’s most effervescent team. Then he molded them into its biggest winners. Continue reading...

Russo doubles up as Arsenal thrash Chelsea to blow WSL title race open

Gambar
After Emma Hayes had announced she will be leaving Chelsea at the end of the season Jonas Eidevall had playfully teased, amid praise for the Chelsea manager, that he wanted to make “life in the WSL as difficult and unpleasant” as possible for her. In front of another Women’s Super League record crowd of 59,042 at the Emirates Stadium, a stadium in which Sam Kerr had stood years before her move to Chelsea and wondered what it would look like with 60,000 fans in it, Eidevall’s side delivered a stunning 4-1 win to put them level on points with the league leaders and rip the title race wide open. ‘Not acceptable’: Bruno Fernandes sorry for latest Manchester United slip

Gambar
* Captain frustrated and baffled after Bournemouth collapse * United capable of getting win against Bayern, says Fernandes The Manchester United captain, Bruno Fernandes, has apologised for an unacceptable performance against Bournemouth that lacked the quality, effort and aggression required. Erik ten Hag won the Carabao Cup during a promising first season in charge but the Dutchman’s second campaign has been a rollercoaster with more lows than highs. McGinn talks down ‘T-word’ after Villa sink Arsenal as Arteta bites tongue

Gambar
* Manager says club ‘have to be motivated’ after 1-0 victory * Third-placed Aston Villa two points behind leaders Liverpool Unai Emery said Aston Villa must learn to cope with the pressure of being labelled title contenders after Mikel Arteta became the latest manager to endorse their credentials. Three days on from outclassing the reigning champions, Manchester City, Villa beat Arsenal 1-0 to earn a 15th straight home league win to move within two points of the new leaders, Liverpool, and one behind Arsenal, leading their goalscorer and captain, John McGinn, to joke he is banning the “T-word”. Asked if his players can deal with heightened title talk surrounding Villa, Emery replied: “Yes, it is better for us. We are there because we deserve it. They are going to speak more about us. It is still going to be the same message I am sending them, sending you [the media] and to the supporters. We have to be excited, we have to be motivated. We are now in third but there are still s

‘We’re really inconsistent’: Ten Hag implores United to toughen up

Gambar
* Manager says team must improve after loss to Bournemouth * Ten Hag takes responsibility for dismal performance Erik ten Hag admitted Manchester United are not good enough to achieve the consistency of an elite team after they were humiliated 3-0 by Bournemouth. Dominic Solanke’s fifth-minute strike was followed by second‑half goals from Philip Billing and Marcos Senesi to secure Bournemouth’s first win at Old Trafford. United’s disjointed, dismal display followed Wednesday’s 2-1 home win over Chelsea to continue a pattern of uneven displays and results. Continue reading...

Elliott’s late winner sends Liverpool top with comeback at 10-man Palace

Gambar
A scrappy, tetchy game of football; two disputed penalty decisions; a deflected equaliser; whole minutes of aimless waiting around while a man in shorts watched a little screen. And then, finally, a moment of grace that this game categorically did not deserve and Liverpool barely did. It came from Harvey Elliott, gliding through the Crystal Palace defence like a man dancing on lily pads, scoring the injury-time goal that earned Liverpool another grubby and scowling three points. They are, for now, top of the league. And in the end, the only thing that ended up “spoiled” was Roy Hodgson’s day. After being forced to apologise for his comments in midweek that Palace fans needed to be more grateful, this was a fixture that suited his browbeaten underdog persona perfectly. Palace did almost everything right here: frustrated, defended tightly, scored on the break. Until a soft second yellow card issued to Jordan Ayew with 15 minutes remaining, they were good value for a famous victory. Con

Championship roundup: Leeds beat Blackburn to keep up pressure at top

Gambar
* James and Summerville strike in 2-0 success * Leicester host Plymouth; Ipswich travel to Teesside Leeds kept up the pressure on the Championship’s top two with an impressive 2-0 win at Blackburn. In a test of their credentials against a vibrant home side, they passed with flying colours, a goal in each half doing the damage. Dan James scored for the third game in succession to fire the visitors into a deserved lead and with Blackburn searching for an equaliser, Crysencio Summerville’s dinked finish 15 minutes from time sealed the points. Even more impressive is that they limited Rovers to precious few chances, with Illan Meslier denying Arnor Sigurdsson late on. Full Championship roundup to follow later Continue reading...

Chelsea need to be at height of powers to combat Everton’s aerial threat

Gambar
Mauricio Pochettino accepts that visit to Goodison Park could be a tall order thanks to his side’s conspicuous lack of inches There was a time when Chelsea were one of the most imposing teams in the Premier League. They paid attention to height and could count on tall players such as John Terry, Branislav Ivanovic, Didier Drogba, Gary Cahill and Michael Ballack to provide aerial dominance at both ends of the pitch. Not any more. If size matters, nobody seems to have told Chelsea. They have conceded from headers in the past four games and Mauricio Pochettino is worried about his side’s lack of stature. It could be a problem when Chelsea travel to Goodison Park on Sunday to face Everton, who have the tallest squad in the top flight. Continue reading...

Federico Gatti heads Juventus top after narrow defeat of wasteful Napoli

Gambar
Juventus delivered an efficient performance as they moved back to top spot in Serie A on Friday, securing a 1-0 home win against a wasteful Napoli thanks to a header from Federico Gatti. Six minutes into the second half, Juventus broke the deadlock when Gatti met an Andrea Cambiaso cross at the back post, outjumping his marker to head into the net. Napoli had numerous chances but Khvicha Kvaratskhelia missed a clear opportunity around the half-hour mark and Victor Osimhen had a goal disallowed for offside in the second half. Ten Hag tells dropped Rashford to use McTominay and Maguire as inspiration

Gambar
* Rashford was left out for Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Chelsea * ‘He’s not in the form he was last year but he will get there’ Erik ten Hag has told Marcus Rashford it is up to the forward to force his way back into Manchester United’s team, with the manager pointing to how Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay have done so. Rashford was dropped for Wednesday’s 2-1 win over Chelsea at Old Trafford, with his replacement on the right wing, Antony, impressing. Rashford prefers to operate as a wide left forward but Alejandro Garnacho is performing well there, his cross creating McTominay’s winner against Chelsea. In 19 appearances this season Rashford has scored twice and made four assists. Continue reading...

If Sunderland are more than a project club where’s the proven centre-forward? | Jonathan Wilson

Gambar
Team have four new signings up front and none have scored, leaving a young, exciting squad lacking edge – and a manager A talk-in between the Sunderland club hierarchy and members of the Red and White Army Supporters’ Trust in the newly refurbished Montgomery Suite at the Stadium of Light. Fans could ask questions by writing them on a slip of paper, adding their name and handing them to volunteers. Frankie, the compere, took one from the pile. It was for Kristjaan Speakman, Sunderland’s sporting director. “Why,” it asked, “have we not got a proven centre-forward?” Speakman, half-joking, sighed, looked visibly deflated. It’s a question he’s been asked probably hundreds of times this year. There was no name on the slip of paper. Looking across the audience, he asked who had written the question, wanting to address them directly. One hand went up. Then another. Then another and another. Soon, as the spirit of Spartacus took hold, everybody in the room had their hand in the air. Contin

MLS Cup Final Preview: LAFC’s shot at creating a soccer dynasty

Gambar
The Western Conference champions will face the Columbus Crew on Saturday. A win would make them the fourth team to win back-to-back MLS championships Los Angeles FC could not have won their first MLS Cup in a more dramatic fashion. Penalties ultimately clinched the victory over the Philadelphia Union, but everyone – certainly those of a black and gold persuasion – remembers that game last year for Gareth Bale’s iconic equaliser in stoppage time of extra time. That was effectively the moment LAFC won it. Steve Cherundolo’s team will do well to replicate the spectacle of last year’s MLS Cup, but they can retain their title by beating the Columbus Crew on Saturday. Only three teams (DC United, Houston Dynamo and LA Galaxy) in MLS history have ever pulled off a championship repeat. LAFC can make themselves the fourth. Continue reading...

McNeil and Doucouré feast on Trippier errors as Everton outlast Newcastle

Gambar
The old refrain of “We shall not be moved” has sounded even more defiant since Everton were plunged into the relegation zone by the biggest sporting sanction in Premier League history. It was a fitting soundtrack to Everton clambering out of it at Goodison Park courtesy of a resounding defeat of shell-shocked Newcastle. Eddie Howe’s side suffered their heaviest defeat of the season on a calamitous night for Kieran Trippier but a reaffirming one for Sean Dyche. Everton were at risk of being punished for another wasteful home display, with Newcastle finally growing into the contest, when the England international presented Dwight McNeil with a decisive breakthrough taken in style. Trippier’s head was buried in his shirt seven minutes later when a similar error resulted in Abdoulaye Doucouré scoring Everton’s second. Continue reading...

Confusion reigns at Manchester City thanks to Guardiola’s midfield muddle

Gambar
Manager is struggling to sort his best combination in the middle of the pitch and needs to find a solution before his team drop more points To suggest in early December of Manchester City’s post-treble season that Pep Guardiola is unsure which midfielders to select seems counterintuitive. For the uber-propagator of the pass-and-move masters to reach this juncture is as quaint as it is material to a current run of four successive Premier League games without victory – and three successive losses in domestic matches earlier in the campaign. John Stones, Rico Lewis, Kalvin Phillips, Bernardo Silva, Manuel Akanji, Matheus Nunes and Mateo Kovacic have been tried in central berths as Guardiola fiddles to find the winning blend. Recent injuries (to Kovacic and Nunes) may be a factor but considering the depth of his resources the manager has failed. In the draws with Chelsea (4-4), Liverpool (1-1) and Tottenham (3-3) and Wednesday’s 1-0 loss at Aston Villa, the Guardiola battleplan of prec

Football Daily | Aston Villa’s rise has been an evolution, not a complete revolution

Gambar
Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! Aston Villa are a grand old club. One of the 12 founder members of the Football League, they have always had that vibe, a sheepskin coat of a club in a league full of trendy anoraks. The magnificent Villa Park – with its brick facade, Holte End, wood-panelled innards and a grandeur befitting many an FA Cup semi-final – has seen it all in its 126-year history. And in the not-too-distant past, Villa have been champions of England, champions of Europe. More recently, they have been relegated, promoted and a bit average. Villa fans have long dreamt of ending their near-30-year major trophy hiatus (no, we’re not counting the 2001 Intertoto Cup) but nobody thought that it could be the Premier League that ends the drought. The size of a trophy cabinet does not maketh a club (just ask Newcastle), but it certainly helps. Continue reading...

Support for women’s football review has meant a lot – now let’s make an impact | Karen Carney

Gambar
Government backing was a relief and a joy after so much hard work but we need to keep pushing to make real change What a week it has been for women’s football with the announcement that the government has backed the review I chaired and the endorsement of NewCo to take control of the Super League and Championship. It is a fantastic start but there is plenty of work to be done. The women’s football review has my name on it, so understandably it means a lot to me. It took a lot of hard work from an incredibly talented team who are eager to make sure the sport progresses and that is something I must thank them for. Continue reading...

McTominay spares Fernandes’s blushes as Manchester United beat Chelsea

After defeat at Newcastle on Saturday and, to a lesser extent, the ban of four media organisations from the pre‑game press conference on Tuesday, Manchester United and Erik ten Hag required a win. In elite sport this is the only way to control the message, no matter the PR strategy, and the mission was accomplished thanks to Scott McTominay, who scored his second Premier League double of the season. ‘Elite in every aspect’: Postecoglou says Son will go down as Spurs great

* Tottenham captain backed to be more prolific in front of goal * Spurs manager says his side is ‘well short’ in attacking output Ange Postecoglou believes Son Heung-min will go down as one of the great strikers as he looked forward to unlocking the full potential of his attacking options at Tottenham. The manager has seen his team concede 11 goals in four league matches, which have yielded a single point – the one in Sunday’s 3-3 draw at Manchester City. There has been criticism that Spurs have been too high and open, albeit Postecoglou has had to contend with a selection crisis that has robbed him of many key players. Continue reading...

Manchester United’s Antony calls out his critics and trial by ‘digital court’

Gambar
* Brazilian says former United players have criticised him unfairly * ‘I’ve never seen them give constructive criticism,’ Antony says Antony has upbraided former Manchester United players for their “malicious” criticism of him, stating that they offer nothing constructive and their views are magnified by a “digital court” that can ruin lives. Since arriving at Old Trafford in the summer of 2022 for £85m the Brazilian has struggled for consistent form. The winger’s first season featured eight goals and three assists in 44 United appearances, and this term he is yet to score or make an assist in 15. Continue reading...

Moving the Goalposts | Christine Sinclair closes international chapter as Canada’s storied pioneer

40-year-old has amazed with her 190 goals, inspired with her voice, and bows out as her country’s most iconic sporting figure Last night Christine Sinclair, the all-time leading goalscorer in international football, played her final minutes on the global stage. With more than 330 appearances for Canada, the 40-year-old stands second in the list of most-capped female players behind the US’s Kristine Lilly. She has featured in six different World Cups, won two bronze Olympic medals and a heroic gold from the most recent edition in Tokyo. The Canadian has had an unparalleled international career and has promised to give one more year of club football with her beloved Portland Thorns in the National Women’s Super League (NWSL), for a 12th season. Sinclair single-handedly put Canadian football on the map and her name is synonymous with the nation. The legacy she leaves behind is enormous, having touched every aspect of sport in North America. Football Beyond Borders: 10 years of using sport to change young lives

Over the last decade, the charity has taught thousands of young people life lessons on the pitch and in the classroom A couple of years after Jasper Kain and Jack Reynolds co-founded the charity Football Beyond Borders they travelled to Salvador, one of the host cities for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Kain was partly there to make a film about football but he also made connections between visitors and locals. “We ran a football tournament, where we paired football fans with families that were living in the favelas,” Kain says. “The idea was to give the locals some income as well as to unite them with fans because they couldn’t access any of the spoils as they didn’t speak any English.” This was a long way from the early days of FBB, which initially ran weekly football sessions in Kennington Park for 16- to 21-year-olds as well as a homework club at a school in Croydon for a younger age group, 75% of whom are at risk of exclusion. Kain and Reynolds both live in south London, a deep

Sacked manager was key in attracting players to club but he probably knew his time was coming to an end “Thanks for helping me a lot in my training. Good luck boss.” Amad Diallo was quick to respond to Tony Mowbray’s shock sacking by Sunderland late on Monday night and it is hard to interpret the Ivory Coast winger’s social media message as anything other than a rebuke to the Stadium of Light’s seemingly trigger-happy board. The talented Diallo shone under Mowbray’s tutelage while on loan at Sunderland from Manchester United last season and were it not for a knee injury sustained during the summer the 21-year-old might well have been part of Erik ten Hag’s first team by now. What now for women’s football after government backs Carney’s review? | Suzanne Wrack

Gambar
If WSL and Championship clubs can agree to split revenue and support the FA-established NewCo then meaningful progress can be made The government’s decision to accept all the recommendations made in the bold Karen Carney‑led review of women’s football should be welcomed. Coming six days after Women’s Super League and Championship clubs agreed to proceed with an independent new company (NewCo) being launched to take over the running of the top two divisions from next season, the response comes at a critical juncture. The government acceptance of the review serves as a reminder of what a holistic approach to the development of the women’s game should include at a time when vested interests, particularly of clubs with Premier League men’s teams, risk arising. Central to the disagreement which delayed Championship clubs from fully supporting the proposed launch of NewCo initially, with some opposing it and others only conditionally supporting it, had been over the voting power of those

Calhanoglu 2.0 lives up to his big talk and shatters Mazzarri’s Napoli revival | Nicky Bandini

The Inter No 10, mocked for claiming ‘I’m not far off De Bruyne or Modric’, is starring – and scoring – in a more defensive role This was supposed to be a tricky week for Inter, going away to the champions Napoli after playing in Portugal on Wednesday night. Having led Serie A for most of this season, they were overtaken on Friday by the same Juventus team that had held them to a draw the previous Sunday. The only path back to the top was to win at a ground where they had done that once in their last 17 league visits. No problem. Hakan Calhanoglu broke the deadlock before half-time, Nicolò Barella added a second close to the hour mark and Marcus Thuram sealed a 3-0 victory. The night ended with the Frenchman twirling his Inter shirt over his head: an homage to the iconic celebration of his idol Adriano after a Milan derby-winning goal back in December 2005. ‘I love the gameplan’: Kulusevski backs fearless Tottenham to be at the top

* Swede praises team for display in 3-3 draw with Manchester City * He believes only thing missing is ‘little bit’ more mental strength Dejan Kulusevski believes Tottenham showed they can go toe-to-toe with any team in the world following their eventful and entertaining 3-3 draw with Manchester City on Sunday and has backed the team to “be at the top” once they learn how to be mentally stronger. Having taken an early lead at the Etihad Stadium via captain Son Heung-min, Spurs twice came from behind to earn a point against the champions, first thanks to a wonderful long-range strike by Giovani Lo Celso and then, on 90 minutes, through a header from Kulusevski. The Swede heavily praised the team afterwards for sticking to the aggressive, attacking style of football that has become the hallmark of the Ange Postecoglou era, insisting the only think lacking from the visitors’ display at the weekend was a maturity that will come with time. Liverpool trailed 3-2 with three minutes of normal time to go, before goals from Wataru Endo and Trent Alexander-Arnold secured a memorable comeback win to maintain a 100% home record this season. “The outcome was perfect,” the Liverpool manager said. “At 3-3 everyone could see the boys wanted more and because we have been lucky today we got it – an outstanding experience.
