Russo doubles up as Arsenal thrash Chelsea to blow WSL title race open

After Emma Hayes had announced she will be leaving Chelsea at the end of the season Jonas Eidevall had playfully teased, amid praise for the Chelsea manager, that he wanted to make “life in the WSL as difficult and unpleasant” as possible for her.

In front of another Women’s Super League record crowd of 59,042 at the Emirates Stadium, a stadium in which Sam Kerr had stood years before her move to Chelsea and wondered what it would look like with 60,000 fans in it, Eidevall’s side delivered a stunning 4-1 win to put them level on points with the league leaders and rip the title race wide open. Throughout this Nations League campaign this has been an England team fighting its own sense of entropy, still giving everything, still trying the same plans and processes in the hope that eventually something would click. And at 9.34pm on a briskly cold Wembley night, it finally did. Ella Toone’s injury-time goal earned England three points and kept their faintly glowing Olympic dream alive. But somehow it also did so much more. There was redemption at Meadow Park for the goalkeeper Khiara Keating as Manchester City won 1-0 and knocked the 14-time FA Cup winners Arsenal out of the competition in the fifth round.
