Kieran Trippier shrugs off injury scare story to lead England on home turf

Defender will captain country at his club stadium on Monday against Bosnia and Herzegovina with no fears over his fitness

Every England tournament countdown needs an injury scare story. The thing about the one which Kieran Trippier sparked on the Wednesday before last – from the other side of the world in Australia – was that he was oblivious to it.

Trippier had come off after 37 minutes of Newcastle’s post-season friendly against Tottenham in Melbourne, a fixture widely derided for the strain it placed on the players after a gruelling campaign and with Euro 2024 looming. Continue reading...

On Thursday 22 October 1992, I attended an event in Crewe to hear Simon Armitage, a newly published poet, read his work. I remember the date because I still have the ticket and poetry recitals were not a normal night out for those of us who grew up in the pubs and clubs of Grimsby in that era. It was a night that changed my life as I glimpsed a possible world that could coexist alongside the heavy-drinking, sometimes scrapping, football-loving culture and the constraints men set themselves back then. Some constraints were self-imposed, others were rooted in the ignorance and prejudice of the time.
