Tottenham thrash 10-man Aston Villa to close gap in top-four race

Last week James Maddison enjoyed going head to head against his Tottenham teammate Micky van de Ven in a darts challenge with the elite players Michael Smith and Nathan Aspinall and the Spurs No 10 stepped up to the oche here to twist a cagey contest in their favour. By the end, ­however, Spurs were able to revel in an evisceration of 10-man Aston Villa.

When the fourth official, ­Darren Bond, indicated 10 minutes of ­second-half stoppage time, it spelled bad news for Villa, who had just gone 3-0 down after Son Heung-min rifled in Dejan Kulusevki’s cutback in consummate style. Throughout this Nations League campaign this has been an England team fighting its own sense of entropy, still giving everything, still trying the same plans and processes in the hope that eventually something would click. And at 9.34pm on a briskly cold Wembley night, it finally did. Ella Toone’s injury-time goal earned England three points and kept their faintly glowing Olympic dream alive. But somehow it also did so much more. Khiara Keating the hero as Manchester City knock Arsenal out of FA Cup

There was redemption at Meadow Park for the goalkeeper Khiara Keating as Manchester City won 1-0 and knocked the 14-time FA Cup winners Arsenal out of the competition in the fifth round.
