Gennaro Gattuso, as a player and now as a manager, has always worn his heart on his sleeve, but as he ripped off his jacket in anger during Marseille’s 2-2 draw against Monaco, his attempts to conjure an emotional response to the apathy that this season has engendered seemed in vain.

It is difficult to dampen the footballing fervour in Marseille. Off the back of two draws in Ligue 1 and an elimination from the Coupe de France, over 63,000 fans still turned out to watch Saturday’s game at the Vélodrome. Continue reading...
