Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk charged by FA over reaction to red card at Newcastle

Football Daily | Luis Rubiales and a toxic tale of when double-doubling down goes wrong

Gambar
Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! It’s been quite the weekend for Luis Rubiales. On Friday, the man’s man of Spanish football admin stood up on the stage at RFEF HQ and gave a masterclass in how to look like a colossal whopper. With the world expecting him to do one, the Spanish FA’s top, top pen-pusher doubled down on his belief that his kiss on the lips of Jenni Hermoso in front of a global audience in the World Cup trophy ceremony was entirely normal behaviour and repeated five times that he wasn’t going to resign. He claimed Hermoso called him “an ace” and initiated the embrace – “she was the one who lifted me up, who brought me close to her body” – and that the kiss was consensual, despite Hermoso saying the exact opposite. Later, on the radio, he double-doubled down on his egotistical claims, denouncing those who doubted him as “d1ckheads” and “dumb@sses”. Great to see The Wonder Stuff at Walsall in Friday’s Memory Lane (full email edition). What a fantastic d

Milan lifted by Christian Pulisic as summer spending gamble pays off | Nicky Bandini

Gambar
The American has grabbed headlines with goals in his first two Serie A games but other new recruits are making an impact too Christian Pulisic is listed on the Milan website as weighing 73kg or 161lb, but Rafael Leão lifted him off the floor like a dad with his kid at school sports day, hugging him right up into the air. When you have been carrying a team’s attack for as long as the Portuguese has, anything else feels light by comparison. Leão has been Milan’s top scorer and assist-provider in Serie A for two seasons running – though he did share the first of those titles with Olivier Giroud in 2021-22 – a blessing and a curse for his team. He seemed to win games on his own at times, but the Rossoneri also became predictable, forcing play through him. When injury forced Leão to miss the Champions League semi-final first leg against Inter, there was no one else able to provide a spark. Continue reading...

* Charlton 1-1 Sheffield United, Crystal Palace 1-1 Reading * Southampton Women beat Lewes 4-1 to go top of table A spectacular stoppage-time strike by Bex Rayner snatched a point for Sheffield United at Charlton on the first weekend of the Women’s Championship season. Kayleigh Green’s goal had put the Addicks ahead after 15 minutes and they were closing in on three points when Rayner was allowed space to run at the home defence in the first added minute. The former Doncaster Rovers Belles and Nottingham Forest midfielder unleashed a brilliant curling shot into the top corner, beyond Sian Rogers in goal. Continue reading...

Megan Rapinoe slams ‘deep misogyny’ in Spanish football after president’s kiss

Gambar
* Player says there is a ‘huge backlash’ against women in US * 38-year-old retired from national team after World Cup exit Megan Rapinoe attacked the “deep level of misogyny and sexism” in the Spanish football federation after its president, Luis Rubiales, kissed forward Jenni Hermoso on the lips after her team’s victory in Sunday’s World Cup final. “On the biggest stage, where you should be celebrating, Jenni has to be physically assaulted by this guy,” Rapinoe said in an interview with the Atlantic published on Tuesday. “There was another picture that signals such a deep level of misogyny and sexism in that federation and in [Rubiales] at the final whistle, just grabbing his crotch. What kind of upside down world are we in?” Continue reading...

Football Daily | Mason Greenwood, Manchester United and a troubling moral vacuum

It’s generally agreed that Manchester United came to the right decision, give or take the rumbles of discontent on the usual Social Media Disgraces. Antonio and Paquetá down Chelsea to give 10-man West Ham victory

Gambar
Spending close to £1bn in the space of a year has not stopped Chelsea from making the same old mistakes. They were dominant for long stretches at the London Stadium, their football easy on the eye, but the defence remained frail, the missed chances piled up and a team packed with promising youngsters fell to a first defeat under Mauricio Pochettino after a ruthless and resilient West Ham once again proved that life under David Moyes is by no means dull. Against the odds, a feisty contest ended with Lucas Paquetá shielding the ball deep on the left and tormenting Chelsea with his flicks and tricks. West Ham’s No 10 enjoyed himself, quashing fears that he would not be in a mental state to play after the revelation that he is being investigated by the Football Association for potential betting breaches, and showed why he was a target for Manchester City. Moisés Caicedo could not get close to Paquetá. Continue reading...

‘I’m so proud of the girls’: England’s 1972 squad celebrate despite final loss

Gambar
Members of first official England women’s squad say team is in great shape to kick on despite disappointment in 2023 final * Sarina Wiegman has ‘no regrets’ after England loss “I never thought women’s football would be like this,” Sue Whyatt, a goalkeeper in England’s first official Lionesses squad of 1972, said. “In my day, football was never going to be a proper career because we had to pay our own way … I’ve never got a shirt or anything”. Watching the World Cup final at London’s Boxpark Wembley with some of the original squad, Whyatt had nothing but adoration for the Lionesses, particularly goalkeeper Mary Earps, who she described as “incredibly humble”. “I can’t help ducking and diving when the ball is near the goal,” she said, chuckling. “Football is a professional career now. Those players are athletes … It’s wonderful.” Continue reading...

Championship roundup: Cesare Casadei keeps Leicester’s 100% record intact

* Midfielder on loan from Chelsea scores late to down Cardiff * Ipswich keep pace with third straight win, while Owls lose again The debutant Cesare Casadei came off the bench to score the late goal that secured Leicester a 2-1 win at home to Cardiff in the Championship and allowed the Foxes to celebrate four straight wins at the start of a season for the first time in the club’s history. A fine strike from Aaron Ramsey looked like earning Cardiff a point after Wanya Marcal-Madivadua had fired the hosts ahead. But the on-loan Chelsea midfielder Casadei had the last word to leave Cardiff, who had defender Mahlon Romeo sent off deep into stoppage time, winless under their new manager Erol Bulut. I Will Always Love You, Neymar – for you are an unrestrained creative genius | Barney Ronay

Brazilian’s move to Al-Hilal is end of his meaningful career but I have adored watching his limitless beauty as a footballer Bittersweet memories. That is all I’m taking with me. So goodbye. Please don’t cry. We both know, I’m not … Ah. Sorry. It’s fine. Just a little dusty in here. When it comes to Neymar and I, me and Ney, the feelings, the farewells, the deeply personal – I’m going to say it – love story of the last 13 years (legal clarification: Neymar has no idea who I am) I feel a lot closer to the Dolly Parton original version right now – rueful, sad, fondly heartbroken – as opposed to the Whitney Houston super-cover: sad but also defiant, hopeful, liberated and ultimately the banshee nemesis of the final chorus, where I Will Always Love You has become I am going to hunt you down and murder you with a scythe. Serial winner Wiegman leads England towards immortality by ditching fear

Gambar
Dutchwoman has serenely steered her team through injuries and suspensions to the World Cup final against Spain After England’s World Cup semi-final defeat of Australia, a grinning Millie Bright approached Sarina Wiegman with arms outstretched. The manager said something while shaking hands with Australia’s goalkeeper, Mackenzie Arnold, that made her captain pause before she waved Bright back in. Bright obliged, putting her arms round Wiegman and lifting her into the air. It wasn’t the first time Bright had lifted aloft a grinning Wiegman and it likely won’t be the last. It has become ritualistic – perhaps there is now some superstition involved – and cameras wait for the much-loved manager’s embrace with her captain. Continue reading...

Five down, two to go: Matildas face moment of truth in high-stakes World Cup semi-final game | Kieran Pender

There are just two peaks remaining for the team to scale their own Everest but every step forward raises the stakes for everyone else * How to watch the Matildas vs England semi-final * Every Matildas story; Golden Boot tracker; guide to all 736 players; full WWC coverage If the Matildas are overawed at going further than the team ever has before, they are doing a good job of concealing it. When veteran duo Tameka Yallop and Lydia Williams faced the press on Monday, it was business as usual – the content of their answers may have betrayed the significance of the moment, but there was nothing in its delivery that suggested anything out of the ordinary. Unimportant friendly or the biggest game in Matildas history? It was hard to say from the pair’s composure, body language and demeanour. It was more of the same 24 hours out from Wednesday’s World Cup semi-final against England. Coach Tony Gustavsson was his usual affable self, ever-friendly, ever-willing to indulge questioning, e

PSG are on the right path but their owners will have to be patient

Gambar
Moving on from the era of Neymar and Lionel Messi is smart, but the team may have to get worse before it gets better By Adam White for Get French Football News Identity is an underrated attribute for an elite football club. Some are difficult to define, while others evolve. The “1-0 to the Arsenal” era under George Graham was quickly followed by Arsène Wenger’s continental connoisseurs, for example. Over time though, a particular history, success and style builds in a club, providing a platform for success. The leading clubs develop an emotional, historical and even wider cultural resonance. This idea has often been lost on PSG. Perhaps until now, that is. The lack of such an identity has been PSG’s biggest obstacle during the Qatari era. In truth though, QSI (Qatar Sports Investments) would have been playing catch-up from the start even if they had managed the situation perfectly. PSG are not France’s biggest club historically speaking, having only formed by a merger in 1970. Neith

Matt O’Riley’s late goal ensures Celtic go top after lively victory at Aberdeen

Gambar
Kyogo Furuhashi and Matt O’Riley scored for the second game running as Celtic beat Aberdeen 3-1 at Pittodrie. Furuhashi capitalised on a defensive error to put the champions back in front inside half an hour, after Bojan Miovski had cancelled out Liel Abada’s early opener. Aberdeen caused Celtic plenty of problems in an enthralling first half with Graeme Shinnie harrying in midfield, Shayden Morris impressing on his first Pittodrie start and the front two posing a constant threat in behind. But Celtic enjoyed much more control in the second half and O’Riley’s late goal ensured they went back to the top of the table after two matches. Continue reading...

Resilient Matildas chasing World Cup glory one game at a time | Kieran Pender

Having banished ghosts of the past, Australia are stronger than ever. Is it enough to get them past England and into the final? * How to watch the Matildas vs England semi-final * Every Matildas story; Golden boot tracker; guide to all 736 players; full WWC coverage Of course it had to end with penalties. It would have been hard to script a more fitting ending to the Matildas’ quarter-final clash with France. Four years on from the nightmare in Nice, when the Matildas exited the last World Cup on penalties to Norway, the ghosts of that heart-wrenching defeat could be found at every turn at Brisbane Stadium on Saturday. Just like Norway, France won the toss to shoot first – history shows that the team taking the opening spot-kick has a considerable advantage, statistically and psychologically. On both occasions the captain, Sam Kerr, was called upon in a clutch moment – four years ago with Australia’s first attempt, after Norway had converted theirs; this time as penalty taker n

Back three may be best way for rejigged England to counter Colombia’s fire | Jonas Eidevall

Gambar
Sarina Wiegman has to make biggest fix yet as England go into Women’s World Cup quarter-final without Lauren James Having taken the long flight from London to Sydney, I’m here to catch the World Cup from the quarter-finals. And when I looked at the final eight, I’d say the four teams with greatest clarity were on the same side of the draw: Sweden, Japan, Spain and the Netherlands. You don’t need to second-guess them, they’re confident and know their roles so well. On the opposite side, each team have improvements to make, including England, where Sarina Wiegman is still searching for the tactics to bring the best from her players. Availability is so important. England are without the suspended Lauren James against Colombia, just as Australia prepared for the tournament with Sam Kerr as their No 9 but lost her until the closing moments of their last-16 match. Wiegman had gone into the tournament hampered by not having Leah Williamson, Beth Mead and Fran Kirby from the team that won t

Saudi Pro League has the big stars – now it has to hope the fervour follows

Gambar
Lavish spending has generated hype and controversy, but how will this project play out once the season starts? A video billboard in Jeddah welcomes those heading into the city along the airport road with a glowing portrait of Saudi Pro League stars, Cristiano Ronaldo still dead centre in the spotlight. Last Sunday, King Abdullah Sports City hosted a high-production value launch event with rappers, glitter and a lot of fans taking photographs. Elsewhere, however, it is difficult to detect much Pro League fever as Saudi Arabia prepares for Friday night’s big kick-off. This may have something to do with the heat; daytime temperatures are currently approaching 40C in Saudi Arabia’s second city and are far higher in Dammam, where Jordan Henderson, under his Al-Ettifaq manager, Steven Gerrard, is set to make his debut against Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr in the opening round’s standout fixture on Monday night. How the Saudi Arabian takeover changed Newcastle United

Gambar
Staff morale has improved and the women’s team have been made fully professional – but there is still a deafening silence on human rights issues The main stand had virtually emptied by the time Yasir al-Rumayyan and his four bodyguards walked slowly down the concrete steps leading from the directors’ box to the St James’ Park pitch. As the Newcastle chairman’s entourage headed on towards the tunnel en route for the home dressing room, the handful of journalists still in the ground feared for Eddie Howe. It was early January 2022, Newcastle had just lost 1-0 at home to League One Cambridge United in the FA Cup and Rumayyan was over from Riyadh, checking on the progress made since the club’s controversial Saudi Arabian‑led takeover three months earlier. Aaron Ramsdale delivers the goods with Arsenal place under threat | Ed Aarons

Goalkeeper could soon have competition from David Raya but he produced fine saves to thwart Manchester City It didn’t take long for Joe Hart to realise the writing was on the wall for him at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola. “He said: ‘Of course you’ll be given the opportunity, but …’ As soon as there are any buts at the end you know there’s a decision,” the former England goalkeeper recalled last year. “It was a two‑hour conversation that kind of ended with him saying: ‘I can’t see this working.’” Hart is by no means alone. Yaya Touré, Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko are some of the big names jettisoned by the City manager in his pursuit of perfection since arriving in Manchester seven years ago. But while Guardiola showed once more this summer that he has no room for sentimentality by allowing Ilkay Gündogan and Riyad Mahrez to depart the treble winners and try “new challenges”, his former assistant and increasingly major managerial rival may have outdone

The woman who wasn’t there: why the USWNT miss Becky Sauerbrunn

The absence of USA captain Becky Sauerbrunn has been felt as the Americans navigate what’s been a rocky World Cup so far. But Lindsey Horan has embraced the pressure United States midfielder Lindsey Horan’s second-half equalizer against the Netherlands last week in the group stage of the 2023 World Cup was a quintessential moment of a captain dragging her team out of the muck of a poor performance to salvage a draw. Those moments are what the world sees, but the everyday duties of a captain take place away from the public eye: meeting with coaches, meeting with teammates, and – critically – serving as the conduit between them. Football Daily | Germany find themselves on the end of the biggest Women’s World Cup shock

Gambar
Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! Germany were the beneficiaries of what stands to this day as the biggest shock in the entire history of the men’s World Cup: the time they stunned Hungary’s world-famous Golden Team in the 1954 final. That was fair enough, all good and well, but the rules of karmic cash-out meant that a terrible debt at some point needed to be settled. You might have thought that back-to-back group exits for the current shower representing the men had levelled the scales somewhat. But no! The football gods were never going to respond to the demise of teams featuring the likes of Timo Werner, Mesut Özil and Kai Havertz with anything more than a disengaged shrug. It’s simply not enough of a jaw-dropper. When you boil it down, it’s not really a shock at all. Continue reading...

‘It’s a very proud moment’: British Muslim women cheer hijab at World Cup

Watching Nouhaila Benzina has boosted confidence of women and girls to play football, helped by FA’s drive for inclusivity On Sunday the Moroccan player Nouhaila Benzina made history by becoming the first football player to wear a hijab in a World Cup game. Bringing Benzina off the subs bench was more than just an opportunity for the 25-year-old player; it proved that the hijab is no barrier to playing football at the highest level despite having been subject to a ban on health and safety grounds until 2014. Muslim women and girls who play grassroots football said they hoped Benzina’s appearance would inspire the next generation of hijabi football stars and persuade clubs to explicitly adopt inclusive clothing policies.
